EL VIEJO ALMACEN is located in the historic casque of Buenos Aires, in San Telmo neighborhood, suburb of the city which had two foundations: in 1536 by Pedro de Mendoza, and in 1580 by Juan de Garay.

Since more than two centuries, the walls of El Viejo Almacén, treasure facts that do the history of Buenos Aires.

In June 1844, Buenos Aires knew the employment of “ether” in surgery, and Dr. Mackena applied it in the hospital that functioned in the present ground of "El Viejo Almacén".

You can live a special night in the most traditional house of Tango, located in the corner of Independencia and Balcarce streets, the corner with more history, which day to day receives very illustrious visitors.

The Restaurant. Traditional place for a toast and to taste the famous argentinian meats, or to choose an international menu.

On the stage of El Viejo Almacén, since 1969 up to the date, the largest interpreters of the “porteña” music performed their songs and dances.

The cobblestone of Balcarce Street turns to be the stage of a past age. Typical characters recreate the gold decade of the fourties.

You can share with them the sensation of living in another time. That time that says the legend: "The men were always brave, and the corners were dates of renewed loves and challenges".

Appealed by the "Almacén" mystic ambience, diverse international figures went there to enjoy it´s show. Juan Carlos and Sophia (Kings of Spain), Josephine Baker, Juan Manuel Fangio, Linda Cristal, Giancarlo Giannini and Marcello Mastroianni were some among their visitors.

In 1977, during the years of military dictatorship, Mayor Cacciatore decides to build eight expressways. For that purpose, hundreds of houses were expropriated and pulled down. El Viejo Almacén loses then 140 square meters when Independencia avenue was widened, and it was also in danger to be destroyed. Ernesto Sabato was the first public person who publicly opposed to the building´s demolition, as he wrote there several pages of his novel "Sobre Héroes y Tumbas" ("On Heroes and Tumbs").

In 1993, the Edmundo Rivero´s family, due to money problems, had to close down "El Viejo Almacén", but in 1996 it´s centenary doors were open once again for singers, musicians and dancers.
