Radio Taxis

Taxis

Even if you don't know Spanish very well, a few simple phrases, and a knowledge of where you're actually going, is all you need. A very important thing is to make sure you flag down a taxi with the yellow writing, on both doors, as they are what ´s called "Radio Taxis". Logo written only on the front doors doesn't count it, as they are independent contractors, and are said to be less safe. If you are staying at a hotel, you can have the front desk clerk or concierge call one, or you can just go to the closest busy street and wait 30 seconds.
In Buenos Aires there are about 32.000 taxis and the fare is 1,12 initial Pesos ($), and 0,14 Pesos (14 cents) each aprox. 200 meters.

Trains  ("Trenes" in Spanish)

Five train stations serve Buenos Aires. Even if nowadays trains mostly just go to the suburbs, though some do run to the Atlantic beach towns to the south, to Rosario city, as well to the north. The "Retiro" Station sees over a million people pass through its doors on a daily basis, and serves as a portal for tourists to head northwest to places like "San Isidro" and "Tigre". Two other smaller train stations lie next door as well as the huge "Terminal de Omnibus" (Bus terminal) from which buses head out to destinations throughout Argentina and beyond.

The main railways companies and their phones are:

  • Ferrobaires - Ex Línea Roca (to the coast) (4304-3165)

  • Ferrovías - Ex Belgrano Norte (4815-8833)

  • Metropolitano - Ex Líneas San Martín, Roca (Urban)
    and Belgrano Sur (0800-666-358736)

  • Metrovías - Ex Línea Urquiza (0800-555-1616)

  • TBA - Ex Línea Mitre (Retiro station: 4317-4400)

  • TBA - Ex Línea Sarmiento (4866-5175/80)

  • Tren de la Costa (4372-6000/6300).

Omnibus lines

Omnibus (Capital Federal and Great Buenos Aires)

The omnibus (also called "Micro" or "Colectivo"), is one of the most used way to be transferred by the "Capital" and the Great Buenos Aires. The tariff is related to the crossed stations, and it is paid in automatic machines on the bus, introducing the value of the trip in currencies (these machines give the returned coins, thus is not necessary to have the right change, but it is necessary to bring money coins, because the conductor cannot change bills). You have to enter by the front door and you descend by the back door, or by the middle one according to the model of the bus.

The vehicles are of different combination of colours, according to their lines, that they constitute more than a hundred.

In some lines exists also a service of busses called "Diferenciales" (Differential busses), which counts on units with air-conditioned, and their passengers go all seated. But they have an expensive tariff.

Long Distance Busses

Long distance busses

A lot of companies of transport for long distance by omnibus exist to virtually go to any point of the country, in comfortable units (some of them with air-conditoned, with TV color, toilette and service of stewardess). They leave from the terminal station located in Av. Ramos Mejía 1680 (tel. 4310-0700), near the "Retiro" railway station.

Due to the amount of companies and destinies that this service covers, it would be impossible to enumerate them in detail. For that reason here there is a link to a listing of all the companies with their telephone numbers of their ticket offices.
