Seminar of ”Rythm, Phrasing and Musicality”
In March 2008 I participated in a thematic seminar by Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne after attended the General seminar in August 2007.
In this thematic seminar we worked on three areas: rhythm, phrasing and musicality, using some times choreographic sequences and their multiple rhythmical variations. The sequences and choreographic ideas used in the seminar mostly corresponded to the most usual combinations in tango and particularly those that frequently present rhythmical difficulties.
The relation between the movement and the musical stimulation is one of the basic elements that build the dance. That´s why it is extremely important to explore and analyse the development of the dance according to different tango music, to be able to better understand this relationship and to improve your dancing.
We learned that you can reduce the tango dance to only emphasize the rhythm, to show the beats of the music, with your steps. You can also add movements in your dance so that you show the musical phrasing, the charachteristics of the unique tango you are dancing. Or you can finally use the tango dance to present the whole narration, the story, of a certain tango. With your movements you will describe a kind of structure – linea force – that all together will build up your tango.
We have also learnt that most tangos can be subdivided into “questions” and “answers”, which request you for a variation in your dance. Specially you can emphasize the “questions” in a certain music melody by more elegant movements, followed with a part of more ordinary steps.
